we are on earlier. >> throughout the olympics, it will begin right after the daytime coverage. today, we begin with a tragic accident at the olympic games. a london media shuttle hit and killed a cyclist just outside the olympic park. a witness said the bus and the cyclist were turning left at the very same corner when the accident happened. the london ambulance and helicopter service attended to the victim. immediate indication, the victim is an athlete but they haven't been identified yesterday now, to allegations of cheating. eight female badminton players, china and two from indonesia have been thrown out of the games for allegedly trying to throw matches in an attempt to get a more favorable slot in the next round. a disciplinary hearing including to investigate the players, which included the reigning

world champions from china. they said in a statement, the olympians violated the code of conduct for not using one's best effort to win a match. several countries have lodged official protests against these athletes. >> i think it was clear or potentially clear from the matches that there had been some possibility of tanking. >> this is unsportsmanlike behavior. people want to see proper competition and we think they have made the right decision. >> indonesia and south korea have appealed the decision. mary is live in fremont with more on how the controversy is reverberating here in the bay area. a former olympian is saying, the players may not be to blame. >> reporter: that's right. the olympian we spoke to competed in this sport and he said, he believes the ousted athlete may not be to blame but may have been following orders from their coaches and they may have feared getting kicked off

the national team if they didn't follow the orders. as a coach here at the badminton academy, bob m achl lasong expected players to always try their best. that's what he did playing badminton for the u.s. during the 2008 olympics in beijing. he was stunned to watch several world class female badminton players actually try to do their worse. >> they were just hitting lazy shots. they were not even moving, pretty much. they were just standing there on the court. it just makes me kind of cringe a little bit, kind of like, what are you guys doing? >> reporter: the crowd even booed the players from china, south korea and indonesia. eight female players were disqualified for deliberately trying to lose allegedly to try to secure a better draw. bob says their actions gives badminton a black eye at a time when the sport is struggling to

gain popularity here in the u.s. he says he believes the athletes were just soldiers following orders. >> i think they didn't have a choice. i think the coaches tell them to kind of lose on purpose so they cannot play their own teammates. >> wendy wang plays her heart out three times a week and wishes thee athletes had done the same. >> it is very sad. for the owe lilympics, it is to against the spirit to play to lose. >> reporter: some are worried this will send brothers the wrong message. brothers, ashton and ethan lee, aren't focusing on it. they are too busy playing to win. coach bob said that back in 2008, when he was playing in the olympics, every match was an elimination round but now it is structured much differently during this olympics. he says, perhaps to avoid this type of scandal, the olympics

needs to go back to making every match a do or die game. reporting live in fremont, mary ann favro. there is con ttroversy surrounding michael phelps. he won his 19th medal. the head of the organizing committee doesn't think phelps is the greatest. that he is clearly, self-evidently in medal tally, he is the most successful. my personal view, i am not sure he is the greatest but he is certainly the most successful. that goes without saying. >> one guy a little more impressed, president barack obama. he tweeted, congrats to michael phelps for breaking the all-time olympic medical record. you made your country proud. if he were a country, he would be 42nd on the all-time medal list today was another big day

for bay area olympics. cal berkeley didn't start rowing until 2009. she earned a bronze medal. the ukrainian and german team took gold and silver. the eight-man rowing team which trains in the east bay and features several bay athletes just missed the podium. the united states finished 0.3 of a second behind germany. they are the undisputed rock stars. the u.s. gymnastics team. they came together during the olympic trials in san jose a month ago. now, they are basking in the golden glow of olympic glory. raj mathai caught up with one of the key members of the fab five. >> reporter: not that you didn't before but now everybody is waiting for you. you are going to be like a

household name all of the sudden. >> that's pretty cool. there are so many supporters that love gymnastics. i hope i cob a rould be a role to all those little girls. anything is possible if you work hard and love something. >> reporter: what was going through your mind last night when you were getting the gold? >> pretty emotional, just standing up there with the u.s. team. it was amazing to know all this hard work and effort has paid off and we did it no matter what anybody said. we just believed in ourself and we got the job done. >> reporter: show this to me. you can't bury it. how are you going to wear this thing? just out and about forever? >> it is pretty heavy. i might have neck problems if i wear it all day. this medal mean so much to me. it is very special. >> reporter: for all the young gymnasts, what's the difficult part of this journey? >> i think the hardest part is the mental part of gymnastics,

just like going through the injuries and that kind of stuff, when you have hard times and just working every single day in the gym. you sacrifice a lot. you don't have time for very much of anything else. so there is a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff people don't see. all of that is worth it when you make it to the olympics. >> reporter: it was loud in london but it was loud for the trials. >> it was the loudest competition i have ever been to. it was amazing having all those people cheering for you. i will never forget that moment. it is so loud out there. she is so cute. kayla and the fab five also got a shoutout for the commander and chief. president barack obama campaigning in ohio asked a lot of questions and a question a lot of us ask when we watch gymnastics. >> these young ladies, as i was

win a medal in the 200-meter breast stroke. missy franklin hits the pool in the 4x200 freestyle. the gold medal will be awarded in a men's gymnastic all-around. our coverage follows the news a long line stretch from the bay area's only open chick-fil-a franchise. it is about the southern baptist founder has drawn nationwide criticism for opposing gay marriage. that caused several supporters to withdraw their support. chick-fil-a fans fought back with the lunch money even though the sandwiches were free. >> the lord andod that i serve says that marriage is between a man and a woman. god created a man and a woman. >> a person can't even say what their feelings and beliefs are

you probably take good care of your car but your car is taking a beating. the culprit, local roadways. drivers are spending thousands of dollars trying to fix their cars. >> we discovered where you are most likely to damage your car and how much more you may be paying to get it fixed. we uncovered how nearly 1500 local drivers are fighting back to get some of that money back. it was just a horrific sound. >> reporter: when it hit, diane

peters heard it immediately. >> four tires and two rims because of this one pothole. >> reporter: one large pothole southbound on 680. costing more than $2,000 worth of damage. >> this was a gaping hole in the tire. >> reporter: from tire companies in the south bay. >> direct injuries from what happens on the roads today. >> reporter: to mechanics in concord. >> probably a 50% increase in parts. >> reporter: for just damaged -- >> just damaged components for steering and suspend shun. >> reporter: even an nbc bay area live truck, signs of wear. >> probably from rough roads. >> reporter: those rough roads are now costing bay area drivers around $700 in additional repairs according to a transportation research center. that's more than double the national average. >> we have got some of the poor

roads in our area because of the high traffic. our roads are so poor that the americanociety of civil engineers gave roadways in california a grade of a d plus. >> if you came home with a d plus, your dad would take a dim view of that. we should too. >> reporter: caltrans is responsible for maintaining more than 50,000 miles of state highways, including bay area roads. we went through ten years of maintenance records to find where your car is most likely to take a beating. the areas with the most pothole repairs, 580 in alamay da county and 101? santa clara county. check out this metal sticking out along 101 near san mateo. >> these are just some of the potholes we found driving

around. >> for a month, we asked to talk with the caltrans maintenance manager familiar with the road conditions. instead, a public affairs officer was made available. >> as far as preventative maintenance, has it increased or decreased in the last ten years? >> i can't really make a i don't have those numbers here. >> reporter: question after question. we had a hard time getting answers. how often does caltrans repair uneven pavement? >> i don't have that number here. >> those caltrans maintenance records we obtained showed the number of potholes increased almost every year since 2002. request for pothole maintenance were on the rose last year, up 33% from 2010. >> there it is. there is the form to fill out. >> reporter: remember diane peters complaint that a pothole damaged her car. she filed a claim with caltrans to get back her $2,000. >> the check is from the damage

send us an e-mail to the unit at nbc bay area.com. we want to tell you about some breaking news. firefighters are battling a fast-moving wild fire near mayor reet ta. what you are looking at there is a mansion destroyed so far. several others are being threatened by this fire. we don't know how many people have been evacuated at this point. that is a consideration and a concern. fire started around 11:30 this morning. more than 150 firefighters and several air tanker rs battling this blaz. at least 220 acres have burned. firefighters say they are in trouble on this one. the fire is only 20% contained. we will continue to monitor that. that is a very large house, at least 6,000 square feet surrounded by a lot of brush. this is going to be intense. the oakland police department is under fire because of a city audit that found the department squandored nearly $2 million on technology that

wasn't used. it details what the auditors called gross mismanagement of police technology, including that well-known shop spotter system. the city spent half a million dollars on the system to track gunfire in the city and failed to use it for years. the department also spent more than $1 million on a patrol car video system that didn't work and wasn't used. >> it is inexcusable. it is unacceptable that you have $2 million wasted in taxpayer dollars, in taxpayer money when the city is in a fiscal crisis, in a public safety crisis and we are not effectively managing technology. >> oakland's police chief says he is aware of the deficiency. he says the city is in the process of hiring a technology expert to try and get things back on track. we will have more of an in-depth look at the the story coming up at 6:00 more of a warm area. let's get a check of our

forecast. numbers warming up into the mid, upper 90s. livermore, 94. cooler at the san jose airport. close to 90 at gilroy. let's bring you that live sky camera network outside. you seal some fog here in san francisco getting compressed by high pressure aloft. that's why it is all squashed right on down to the sea level. it has a lot of forward motion with it. we do think we will have patchy fog for tonight. let's take you over to the olympic stadium. we do have clearing conditions over the past 24 hours and more sunshine coming our way in that forecast. you want to stay tune for usain bolt getting going at the olympic stadium in the coming days. the marine layer and fog is hanging out right across monterrey and into santa cruz and we are going to continue to see it build up across our southern coastline as we head

around tonight. it is going to be patchy in nature. we are not expecting too much to make it over to the east bay. here is what we are looking at over the next couple of days. height pressure system offshore has been producing these 90s inland, through thursday. that will keep it hot. that's going to push off here to the north and we will gradually get temperatures cooling down. with the hot weather, mold in the hot category and grass in the moderate. as far as the fog, a little bit of patchy fog in marin and for the coastline. we will see the fog pushing back for a sunny afternoon on thursday and hotter inland. we will look at the inland temperatures in the mid-90s by 4:00 p.m. for the coastline, temperatures in theow 70s and also mostly sunny skies. in london, a few showers on thursday, friday, and also for saturday. temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s. more coming up in the full

update on breaking news in southern california where firefighters are battling a devastating wild fire 90 miles southeast of los angeles, in riverside county. one large home completely

destroyed. several other homes are threatened. the fire has grown in the last half houby it is now 350 more acres. more than 100 firefighters on the scene. they are trying to put out this fire. right now, we know it is only 20% contain. no word how many people are evacuated. as you can see, a large wild fire burning in riverside county. we will keep you posted with any updates right here on nbc bay area. >> statues stolen. tonight, members of the campbell community are looking for answers. the main question, why would someone steal a four-foot statue of a saint from a local church? kris sanchez joins us from st. mary's catholic church in campbell. the church is ironically located right across the street from the station. that's pretty brazen. >> reporter: it is. it is less than a length of a football field from where we are. the front door of the police department. it was pretty daring to take that little statue of saint bernadette, which was bolted down on the pedestal with the

two bolts. >> i love mary. whenever my heart is broken or something is going on in my life, i make a trip out here. >> reporter: today, mary stands alone out by the catholic church in campbell. her companion, saint bernadette, was stolen sometime between 9:00 thursday night and 10:00 friday morning. this is a photo of the statue as kneels before mary. >> there is a lot of history and emotion attached to the sat sta. hopefully, whoever took it will bring it back. >> reporter: ironically, the church is across street from the campbell police department where investigators are looking through surveillance video for clues. >> it has a high value for the cost of it. it could either be the cost of it or somebody playing a prank or making a bad decision in the ink hours. if it was a prank, it isn't

harmless. it is felony grand theft. it wasn't adornment. it was a sort of spiritual connection. >> it is like a window that opens to heaven. it means a lot for people when they come and stand in front of the statue and pray to god, to the lore and virgin mary. >> reporter: they are playing they will be back. >> bring bernadette back. the people here need her. >> reporter: back when the two statues were purchased together with transportation from italy, it was about $11,000. the church says it will try to replace saint bernadette but it is going to take some fundraising and some time. in campbell, kris sanchez, nbc bay area news. a proposed mosque in the south bay is under new scrutiny. the south bay islamic center

wants to build a mosque on 15 acres on san martine. the cordoba center would consist of a mosque. some are concerned of the impact on the mostly rural area. back to london where the u.s. women's water polo team made up of several bay area athletes started out with a big lead in the second game against spain but that lead evaporated late. the game ended in a 9-9 tie. team usa is now 101. now, it may be one of the best stories of the london olympics. os star pistorious, a double-leg amputee on the south african team. he will be the first amputee runner participating and will run the individual 400-meter race saturday and will be allowed to run any part of the 4x400 meter relay.

he can't believe how excited he will feel while on the track. >> you wait for four years. i would like to have a good performance. >> the story was, he was the lead run nert semi finals of the relay at the world championship despite concern that his carbon fiber blades would be a danger to other athletes. >> the u.s. added a handful of other medals. >> the british pick up their first gold medal. mark barger has a rundown of today's top stories and he joins us live. hey, mark. >> hey, janelle and jessica, yes, the folks here in britain were freaked out that they hadn't gotten a gold medal before today. here is the headlines. keep calm and carry on. they would eventually get a gold medal. the u.s. added to its medal

count. >> christian armstrong won her second gold medal. it was the u.s.'s tenth of a day. prince william and harry were on hand to lead the national celebration where the u.s. winner's quad rowers took a bzonze. >> we came here to win a medal and took a bronze. >> reporter: not faring as well, venus williams. she still has a shot at a record fourth when she pairs up with sister, serena, in doubles. the silver medalists archers were eliminated in singles competition. michael phelps moved forward in the preliminary round of the men's 200 meter medley. the mayor of london got stuck on a zip line at a park set up for olympic activities.

this is a day of jubilation in britain. they are on the board. god save the queen. >> reporter: we should point out that the mayor was the first person to ride that zip line. he was only stuck on there for about five minutes we are told. it is going to be a busy night on nbc's prime time coverage for bay area athletes, especially in the pool. all the aquatic action. we have san jose's scott russell that will be competing in the finals of the 200-meter breast stroke. he is not a favorite for medals but anything can happen in these games. you can look out for competition. we have cal berkeley along nathan adrian. he will be going tonight in the 100-meter freestyle. this is a place where we could see a medal for him. he has to get by a guy named james magnussen, who is the favorite. kristian ipsen will be going at

combining two breast cancer drugs, rather than giving them to patients separately, could increase survival rates. that's according to a new study in the new england journal medicine. giving women two common breast cancer drugs at the same time, those lived nearly six months longer than those who took the drug separately. the cancer progressed more slowly and they were more likely to experience side effects. there cob a crisuld be a cr blood supply. summer travel and extreme heat have kept donors away from blood drives. red cross officials say if the trend continues, doctors may have to cancel elective surgeries until blood products are more available. let's turn it over to jeff ranieri. >> the weather is going to cooperate a little bit more as we head foo saturday and sunday. we have been hearing from a few

winds are going to shift and that's going to bring us a cooling wind coming back for the bay area we think is going to be strong enough to not only knock down our coastal temperatures but for the interior valleys. for thursday, 60s and 70s for the coast. it will be hot inland, one of the hottest days of the week. by friday, a little bit of slight cooling. temperatures that could drop 5-8 degrees by this weekend. 93, los gatos. 90, san jose. 96, morgan hill. cooler in palo alto, low to mid-80s. close to 100 in walnut creek. if you are out in the sun, it will feel like 100. your car thermometer is going to feel like 100. you come back over the east bay hills close to the bay, only about 20 miles. san francisco, mid-70s. close to 80 in oakland. low to mid-90s in santa rosa. we are not expecting record-spreading temperatures

thursday. a lot cooler here in london. the event we are highlighting is rowing. a few potential showers. only about a 30% chance. we are going to see that chance linger in the forecast. a mix of upper 60s and low 70s. not as hot as it was last week but not too bad considering how much rainfall they have had this year. you know the drill. we have a little factoid for you. rowing is the only sport where the competitors cross the finish line backwards. many of you are thinking, wa about swimming. >> in swimming, they touch the wall backwards but in rowing, they go through the finish line backwards. 12 rowers competed from the bay area. a lot coming from stanford. as we head throughout saturday, we are starting to cool off in the upper 80s. as we head throughout sunday, mid-80s. by monday, tuesday, of next week, we do have some low 90s coming on back. when i went backwards across

she was cal's head team physician from 1995 to 2008, when she resigned to spend more time with her husband and two kids. it is her commitment to her family that made her hesitate when offered the job of a lifetime. >> initially, the phone call came. i didn't accept right away. >> reporter: as chief medical officer for the parolympic, she received. >> it is almost like we have been training for this role. >> for the role, dr. chang will oversee a team of 80, providing care for more than 500 athletes including dozens and current cal athletes, many of whom she has already treated. >> i don't want to see you when you are injured or hurt but just come by and say hello. >> reporter: at the elite level, injuries are inevitable.
